Marionette Lines*

The oral commissure or Marionette line is the term used to refer to the area at the corner of there mouth where the upper and lower lips meet. This line often extends downwards and increase in depth and length during the ageing process.

The appearance of Marionette lines is a gradual process, initially they can appear soft and slight but they gradually deepen and lengthen with increasing age. Marionette lines also cause smaller lines and wrinkles to form around this area of deficit. During the ageing process, collagen and elastin levels decrease and areas around the chin and cheek region appear less firm. Facial volume loss also occurs , this may result in a visible sag in the area of the lower face.

Does everyone develop Marionette lines?

The answer in short is no. Not all faces are the same, nor do they age in the same way. Variables such as genetics and family predominance play a role, a patient may notice that older family members have these lines but in a more extensive pattern . Smoking, diet , UV radiation exposure and skin care regimen all play a factor in marionette line development.

How do you treat Marionette Lines?

In almost all instances the oral commissure or marionette lines are treated with dermal fillers. Botox can be injected to the area, but results in a less effective result. Dermal fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring substance in the human body. The main role of dermal fillers is to restore loss of facial volume. Restoring lost volume gives the face a fuller appearance and most importantly for the lower face and chin removes the sag and downturn of the mouth.

What can I expect from Dermal Filler treatment to the Marionette lines?

The results of dermal filler treatments are volume dependent , each patient is assessed prior to treatment by one of the Visage Clinic Harley Street trained aesthetic doctors and the specific volume required will be outlined. Dermal filler treatments are bespoke, individual and tailored to the specific facial anatomy of the patient.

How long do Dermal filler treatments for Marionette lines last?

On average dermal fillers last between 9-12 months with a gradual reduction in volume. Because hyaluronic acid is a natural substance your body reabsorbs it gradually over time. Dermal fillers allow for repeat procedures to be carried out so that the desired look can be achieved in full.
