Wrinkles are ridges, folds or creases in the skin. They are whether we like it or not, an inevitable part of the aging process. Our first wrinkles appear due to facial expression, we tend to develop wrinkles on the upper forehead first, the skin here is thinner and often become less elastic. Factors such as sun damage, smoking and dehydration also play a role in wrinkle formation. People who have a high degree of facial expression, such as frowning tend to have wrinkles at an earlier age, due to repetitive movement.
What are the different types of Wrinkles?
Two types of wrinkles exist. We refer to these two types as Dynamic and Static. Dynamic wrinkles and lines form and become visible with facial expression. These lines form during the movement of the facial muscles and disappear when the face relaxes. Static wrinkles are the deeper lines or furrows that form with repetitive expression. Over time these lines become apparent and visible even when the face is at rest. The main areas affected are the upper forehead and the glabella region ( the area between the eyes) . In the glabella region people tend to develop a 1 or an 11 crease. Have a look in the mirror and see which one you are!
How does Botox treat wrinkles?
Botox has been used for over 30 years in the treatment of wrinkles. It was first discovered for it’s cosmetic properties by accident . Botox was used to reduce movement in a certain muscle around the eye, it was only on reviewing the patient a few weeks later that it was noticed how fantastic they looked and more importantly their wrinkles had disappeared! Botox treats wrinkles in two ways. Firstly it reduces movement in the targeted muscles and thus reduces the formation of dynamic wrinkles ( we talked about this above). When Botox works, these wrinkles do not form. Secondly,Botox reduces the formation and deepening of static wrinkles. Remember , you now have a reduction in repetitive movement, the face is now rested and these deep lines are softened.
Will botox stop deep lines from forming?
This depends on factors such as age, when you get your first treatment and how often you are treated. The best cure for anything is prevention and this is very true in relation to wrinkles and skin creases. A person who has their botox treatment prior to deep lines forming can prevent them from forming completely. If a person already has deep lines then Botox treatment can help soften these lines and help prevent deepening.
How often do i need to get Botox to prevent deep lines?
This is a very common question that we get asked at Visage Clinic. We recommend that your first three treatments be spaced 3 months apart. Botox takes 2-3 days to take effect, is at it’s maximum strength at 14 days and lasts for about 3 months. By having three consecutive treatments you are reducing dynamic wrinkles and preventing heavy static lines from forming/developing. One of the things we do not recommend is to have a treatment and then wait 18 months for your next treatment. This will not give you the double benefits of botox and those deep lines will be more pronounced and even deeper!
Will Botox get rid of my deep lines?
Like we talked about above, if you treat your wrinkles early and prevent deep lines from forming then you can almost completely prevent them. If you already have these deep lines then botox will work by softening these lines and most importantly prevent them from getting deeper.
